I have been never a fan of Walmart. In the mid-90’s I drove a 1974 VW Beetle with a bumper sticker saying “Boycott Walmart”. This being the mid-90’s, I needed to come up with a username for various online companies. I decided to relate my dislike for the Walton family’s companies.
Fast forward two decades and my username on most Internet sites is still the same anti-Walmart name. One of these many sites is gmail. I registered for my gmail account in 2004.
Much to my surprise, in September of 2013 I received an email from Walmart Layaway Notification <noreply@wal-mart.com> informing me of my layaway at a Walmart in Marietta, GA. I received a handful more that holiday season from the same store.
I originally thought that a single employee was using my email address for Walmart customers who refused to give an email address, or simply did not have one. In the fall of 2014, more layaway notifications came in. I was informed of layaways in Lexington, KY, Wyomissing, PA, and Jacksonville, FL.
Clearly this is more than just one employee. I am not sure if Walmart layaways are handled by store employees or are run though a centralized call center.
This blog recounts the various layaway notifications I have received.
Disclaimer: Each email comes in with the following footer: “This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. If you have received this email in error destroy it immediately. *** Walmart Confidential ***”
Since I am the owner of the email address, I feel I fall under the category of ‘individual or entity to whom they are addressed’. If Walmart has a problem with that they know where they can reach me.
